A Perfect Planet

In his recent TV series called, ‘A Perfect Planet’, David Attenborough extols the virtues of our home. He said, ‘Planet Earth is perfectly tuned to sustain life … there is a unique balance of natural forces’. I wholeheartedly agree. In the series, he highlights the importance of the vital timings and rhythms of the sun, the weather and the oceans, saying life is sustained through their predictability. As is usual in all his documentaries, the photography is stunning, superbly show-casing the awesome wonder, intricacies and extraordinary beauty of our natural world.

What I do not understand is how anyone, when observing such amazing complexity and diversity, co-existing in mutual dependence, sustaining life in all its perfection, splendour and glorious beauty, can possibly say that all this just happened by chance, by accidental coincidence over hundreds of millions of years. What unscientific guesswork is this? Personally, I cannot comprehend how men and women, as they observe the factual evidence all around us, would rather believe in the unproven and logically impossible theory of evolution than in a Designer and Creator Who made all things.

Everything around us in the natural world leads me to believe that a Divine Designer is behind it all. The extraordinary uniqueness and diversity, the precise perfection and the wondrous beauty of creation point unquestioningly and unmistakeably to a Designer and Grand Creator, the Sovereign Lord God Himself.

The very first words in His book, the Bible, reflect the foundation of where our understanding begins:

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth …

… God saw all that He had made, and it was very good”

The Sovereign Lord God, our Creator, reveals Himself to each one of us through our consciences and through creation. We choose either to believe the truth of God’s Word or to believe the theories of sinful humans. The results of our choice are reflected in the lives that we live and have consequences in this life and for the next. God’s Word tells us, “The fool says in his heart, ‘there is no God’”

Our Creator made each of us in His own image and charged us to be stewards of His perfect creation, to take care of and to look after His natural world around us. The disorderly mess of our planet is because we have refused to honour God, to listen to Him and to walk in humble obedience to His directions as to how we should care for and carefully manage the world that He has entrusted to us. We have selfishly abused, misused and raped His glorious creation for our own gratification and to fulfil our financial greed. Our sinful disobedience has brought chaos, corruption, confusion ... and even climate change?!

What is the answer? Our scientists and environmentalists lay out their hopeful plans, with no guarantee of success, for many of them continue to ignore the Lord God.  What does the Lord say?

“Return to Me and I will return to you”

“Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other”

“I have loved you with an everlasting love”

“Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them

turn to the Lord, and He will have mercy on them, and to our God, for He will freely pardon”

The environmental activists tell us if we do not take action NOW, it will be too late.

The Lord God, our Creator says, “… NOW is the time of God’s favour, NOW is the day of salvation”

“Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth ... the former things will not be remembered”
